Solstice Greetings to you, Reader!

It has been decades that I have been celebrating solstices.
In the northern hemisphere - summer. In the southern hemisphere -- winter. Each a celebration of our relationship with the light. Seasons turning.

Crops and plantings. Harvests and abundance.
​Up Until Now, the celebrations have been shamanic or spiritual, fire ceremonies, rituals on the land, gathering in community to create offerings.

This Solstice finds me in Armenia. One of my sons has been living here as a Peace Corps volunteer since March 2025, and this is my first time visiting this extraordinarily beautiful land.

The beauty here takes my breath away. The mountains seem to sing their praise for life itself, the glory of being alive on earth. Fruit trees are everywhere—berries, apricots, peaches, cherries, apples, pears—offering their gifts with such generosity that it feels as though the Earth is celebrating alongside us.

While it feels strange not to be tending a Solstice fire in my backyard, gathering on a beach, or sharing ceremony in Peru, I am deeply aware of the light here. In these ancient mountains and fertile valleys, I feel the same sun, the same Earth, the same invitation to open my heart in gratitude for this season of abundance and possibility.

I am writing to you sitting by a rushing river in Kapan. She reminds me in her song and color of the burgeoning Urumbamba river in the Cusco valley of Peru, or the river that roars through Machu Picchu town where the train stops at the base of the mountain sanctuary of the city in the clouds.

The same sun that warms these mountains in Armenia is warming you wherever you are today.

As I sit beside this river, I find myself reflecting on how easy it can be to forget that we belong to something much larger than ourselves. The sun rises each day without asking anything of us. The Earth continues her generous offering. The rivers flow, the trees bear fruit, and life keeps reaching toward life.

Perhaps that is the invitation of the Solstice.

Wherever you find yourself today, take a moment to step outside. Lift your face to the sun. Place your feet upon the Earth. Notice what is flourishing in your life. Notice what is ripening. Notice what brings you alive.

This turning of the season invites us to celebrate the light— in the sky above us, and within us. To offer gratitude for the abundance that surrounds us and to remember that we belong to this beautiful, living Earth.
